Chron`s Disease Diagnosis
Chron`s disease is an inflammatory disease which affects the intestinal tract. It usually occurs in the area which bounds the small and the large intestines, but it also affects other parts of the human body such as mouth, anus, esophagus, stomach and even the entire colon. People suffering from chron`s disorder complain of rectal bleeding, abdominal pains or diarrhea. Some experience also fever, weight loss, or skin problems.
Many symptoms can't tell you exactly if you suffer from this condition, as they can be confused with other diseases due to their similarity. In order to get a clear diagnosis for the Chron`s disease, several tests are needed to help you see which part of your digestive tract is not functioning properly.
First of all any doctor should be informed regarding the patient's medical history to see whether he/she has other disease assembling with the chron`s disorder. Lab tests are also required in order to link possible symptoms to the chron`s disease. They help the doctors to detect any infections, inflammations or even internal bleedings. Taking lab tests imply checking the levels of blood proteins, mineral levels, number of red and white blood cells and possible infections.
Endoscopy is a procedure that helps doctors to determine the presence of any disorders on the gastrointestinal tract. It includes tests such as bariun X-rays, colonoscopy, video capsule endoscopy or CT scans. The barium X-ray is efficient in determining whether there are problems, especially in areas which are difficult to visualize, like the small intestines. The fluid is administrated by mouth or through the rectum, appearing white on the X-ray film. It allows the doctor to identify how much of the digestive tract is damaged. CT scan is more efficient as it uses computer image, offering detailed pictures of the abdomen or pelvis.
Through Colonoscopy, doctors introduce a flexible tube through the anus into the large intestine projecting the images onto a monitor. On the other hand sigmoidoscopy studies the lowest part of the large intestine. These tests are the mostly used as they offer accurate information about the patient's intestine. Doctor may also take small tissue samples to examine them through the microscope in order to set a full diagnosis.
Another revolutionary technique used in setting diagnosis, is the use of the Video Capsule Endoscopy. Patients swallow a capsule containing a small camera which records and transmits the images on its way through the gastrointestinal tract. This technique is more tolerable and also efficient in determining whether any small parts are somehow affected.
Chron`s disorder seriously affects the quality of anyone's life. If not treated properly, the disease progresses determining swellings, inflammations including serious complications, leading to intestine obstruction or ulcer which produce fistulas that can be easily infected.
