There is increased health and disease awareness among the general public since the last two decades. There is greater concern regarding the food consumed and the effect it has on the body. Also there are constantly increasing levels of interest in knowing about the nutritive value of the foods consumed.
Common people or call them lay people, if you may, are keeping themselves abreast with the latest developments in the nutrition and food industry. Every mother or nowadays even fathers, checks the labels of the food and drinks that their children consume, to make sure about the nutritive value.
With so much of activity going around in the food and nutrition related fields, it goes without saying that this industry has the best kind of career opportunities at present and will remain so for a long time to come.
One such career opportunity in the field of nutrition is that of a Nutritionist. The basic job of a Nutritionist deals with the study and evaluation of the nutritive value of food.
There are hoards of career possibilities for a certified nutritionist. The certified nutritionist can either work for a health organization or even better can start a private consultation and have the freedom of being a self employed professional. There are varieties of sub categories in the nutrition like child nutrition, sports nutrition, and geriatric nutrition, and obstetric nutrition, nutrition in people with existing or associated chronic diseases and so on and so forth.
There is also the option of offering the professional services to a food laboratory or a regulatory body which keeps a watch on the labeling and description of nutritive value of the contents of the packaged foods.
The weight loss industry is a massive money spinner by itself. There is a huge requirement for Nutritionists and dieticians in this industry. The nutritionist is consulted for advice regarding the type of foods which are high or low in terms of nutrition.
The basic requirement for application to a undergraduate course in Nutrition and being a Certified Nutritionist is having a degree in science, which includes biology and or /chemistry at the school level or the higher school level. For students who have not had science in their school curriculum, there is an option of learning a science access course and on successful completion can then apply for the undergraduate course.
A post graduate degree requires science at the undergraduate curriculum or University.
