Food Health Diet Nutrition

Food, Health, Diet and Nutrition are all inter related terms and linked in a profound way to one another. The health of every individual is dependent to a large extent, if not solely, on the nature of his food, his dietary habits and the status of his diet's nutritive value.

People actually mean good health or absence of disease, when they say about health. But in the broader sense of the term, health just means the state of the body and that state could be excellent, good, moderate, not so good, and bad or even failing health or poor health, which is known as sickness. Now Health is not just limited to the physical health of the body. Mental and Emotional health are factors which need to be included in this broad perspective. A person in good health or optimum health in the true sense will possess all round optimal physical, mental and emotional health all three together.

Food is basically what ever an individual eats or is consumable or edible. Food can be defined as any item which is consumable and is safe and does not cause any harmful side effect or any disease in the body. A substance considered as food by one individual may not be given the same preference by another person.

Now once the term food and health has been understood, we need to analyze what is the factor which maintains this health or what are the variables that contribute to the health of an individual. Though there are a number of issues which affect health, either directly or indirectly, the factor which affects the health in a huge way or important way is the 'diet'. The diet can be given the position of pride among the other factors.

If diet is so important, then it is crucial to understand the exact meaning of diet. Diet can be any food or drink consumed on a regular manner, and can be either healthy or unhealthy, or even disease producing if not taken care of.

Nutrition is something which is actually aimed at maintaining good health. It is required to consume vitamins and the minerals and trace elements which are important for the normal functioning of all the systems and the body in general. This becomes especially true in age groups where the growth is maximal, like the infancy to the teens, and also during increased needs of the requirements like pregnancy or lactation.
