Importance Of Good Nutrition

Nutrition is the basis of a healthy life. Good nutrition deals with the presence of all the requisite vitamins, minerals and the trace elements in the perfect and recommended quantity.

The food which we consume only provides the necessary fuel or energy. But the nutrients help in other functions like maintenance of proper functions of the various systems in the body.

Iron is a mineral required for formation of blood, but it is not produced by the body. Iron is found in ample quantities in red meat, fish, vegetables like spinach, turnips, bitter gourd etc, and fruits like dates and olives.

Calcium is a mineral essential for many functions in the body like maintenance of the strength of the bones and teeth. Also helps in bone and teeth growth. Calcium has a major role in the proper functioning of the various hormones of the body. It also helps in the removal of plaques and prevents the accumulation of these plaques along the walls of the blood vessels. Calcium is found in plenty in milk and milk products, eggs, cheese, vegetables like turnip, spinach, green leafy vegetables etc.

Zinc is another mineral essential for the body. It helps in a great variety of functions ranging from proper functioning of the skin, reproduction, maintenance of normal libido, normal mental functions like intelligence, concentration, memory and emotional balance etc. The importance of zinc during infancy and childhood cannot be stressed enough, because zinc plays a vital role in many of the normal developmental processes in them. Zinc contributes to the normal metabolic activity in the cells, normal sexual growth, development of the sense of smell and taste and also in mediating various chemical reactions occurring in the body. Zinc is found naturally in a variety of foods like nuts, red meat which includes beef, lamb etc, sea food, milk, cheese, oat meals etc. But the availability of Zinc in the vegetarian food is lesser as compared to that in the non-vegetarian food.

Magnesium is yet another mineral necessary for proper functioning of the neuromuscular system. It also helps in normal functioning of the emotional responses and is often called as the soothing mineral, because it helps in normal sleep. Magnesium is found in fruits like bananas, and also in fish and meat.

Proteins, Vitamins like A, B, C, D, E, K are all other essential nutrients which should be supplemented in the daily diet. Thus a balanced diet can provide a good nutrition to the body and help in maintaining optimum health.
