A pregnant women's calorie demand per day in her late pregnancy stages goes up by about 300 calories and this means that her consumption of food has to increase proportionately to meet this demand. The increase in weight during pregnancy often takes a different direction as compared to the weight of the developing baby; it might be quite interesting to ask why a pregnant woman may increase weight by about 25 to 35 pounds when the new born baby may only weigh about a quarter of that.

The extra weight is usually consists of other surrounding components that the body builds to help it in carrying the pregnancy to its full term. These include about 7 pounds of extra stored protein which is meant to serve as a reserve for the developing fetus, lots of extra blood and other fluids including the amniotic fluid, and of course the placenta. For the woman's body to build all these stuff adequately, she needs to have a balanced diet but especially rich in proteins since the amino acids are very vital in the growth of the fetus.

Most women may develop high blood pressure during pregnancy due to the extra calories that they may consume. It is therefore important for pregnant women to try and consume reasonable amounts of protein especially making sure that the protein consumed is cholesterol free, white meats such as chicken and fish are good sources of this protein. As much as fish is good for pregnant women and any other person for that matter, it is important to note that some deep sea fish may contain dangerous chemical which may be detrimental to a pregnant woman's health. The diet should also be rich in vitamins as they helping building the immune system and the body's disease fighting organisms which should come in handy during birth.
