Whole Foods Nutrition

Whole foods are extremely healthy foods. What exactly is meant by the term whole foods? Whole foods are foods which have undergone a very little or no refining or processing before being consumed. It is a well known fact that processing and refining reduce the nutritive value of food and also cause so many health problems and disorders.

Whole foods also include the grains which are not polished before consumption and the milk which is not subjected to homogenization. Polishing is a process by which the outer layer of rice and other grains are removed in a grain mill. This polishing removes the high nutrient content present in the outer layers and prolonged use of polished grains can lead to nutritional disease like Beriberi.

Modern life has many complicated ways of food production, storage and transportation. The increase in export and import of food articles and products have led to wide spread use of techniques to refine food and process them too, in order to enable a longer shelf life. Also people are so busy in the hustle and bustle of life that they find it convenient to shop for large amounts of food articles and store them for regular and divided use. This makes them look out for foods with preservatives and processed food. Eggs, milk, meat, fish, fruits, grains, oil, sugar, salt and what not; every single item on the dining table seems to be processed, refined, pasteurized and homogenized.

The health disasters of prolonged consumption of such processed foods are innumerable. Refined foods are quite dangerous for the health and they affect the liver in particular. The human body is capable of digesting and assimilating only a certain amount of chemical combinations. When people eat these refined and processed foods, the liver and the digestive system is bewildered. When the body does not have the requisite enzymes and chemicals to break down or digest such food, there is a load and excessive stress on the Liver and the portal system. This is because the Liver is the organ which takes the brunt of the toxins and undigested chemicals, which are discarded by the digestive apparatus.

The use of whole foods should be promoted and encouraged, due to a variety of reasons. These foods are totally healthy, nutritive and easily digestible. In addition to the nutritive value, these foods add to the cosmetic value too, because consumption of such whole foods is extremely beneficial for skin and hair health too.
