Calcium Supplement With Vitamin D
Calcium is a word almost synonymous with bones. Even common non medical people and school going children are aware of the fact that calcium is good for bone health.
Calcium definitely is necessary for optimum bone health and also in many other processes of the body. Calcium is necessary for the formation of bones and also teeth. Calcium is necessary in the normal hormonal functions of the body.
Calcium is necessary to maintain the normal density of the bones. What makes the calcium intake so essential is the fact that the calcium is stored in the bones and this deposited calcium maintains the required bone density.
If the minimum dietary intake requirement of calcium is not met with, the body compensates by borrowing from the bone deposits of calcium. Prolonged dietary deficiency can lead to extreme thinning out of the bones due to the maintained borrowing by the blood.
When such thinning of the bones occurs, any slight injury or a fall can lead to fractures. Such patients take a longer time in the bone healing and joining of the fracture. The thinning out of the bones is known as Osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is a high risk in females as compared to males. Pregnancy and consequent lactation causes an increase in the calcium requirement during the reproductive years. There is also loss of menstrual blood every month during the reproductive years of females. This also leads to increased loss of calcium.
Now this increased requirement if coupled with a dietary deficiency can lead to increased thinning out of the bones in females. After menopause the calcium content of the bone is further depleted.
Hence it is advised that females should take extra care of their dietary requirements of calcium, through out their lives.
Calcium is found freely in many of the foods which we commonly consume. The dairy products like milk, curd, cheese etc are all excellent sources of Calcium. Also many vegetables like Kale, spinach, Turnips, green peas and fruits like oranges and nuts like almond and cashew nuts are all rich sources of calcium.
Vitamin D is essential for the calcium to be absorbed properly from the stomach and also in the utilization of the absorbed calcium. Hence while taking calcium supplements it may become necessary to take vitamin D along with it.
But as is the case with any medication or supplement, it is advisable to use these calcium and Vitamin D supplements only under strict medical guidance and supervision.
