3 Day Cardiac Diet

Three Day Cardiac Diet

The 3 day cardiac diet was developed at the Cleveland Clinic as a very low calorie diet and quick weight loss program intended to help cardiac patients lose weight rapidly. Hence the name 3 day cardiac diet. The primary use of the 3 day cardiac diet is to achieve rapid and short-term weight loss as well as reduce the risk of heart disease. The 3 day cardiac diet works to lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

The 3 day cardiac diet should be adhered to strictly with no changes, additions or substitutions. The following shows in precise measurements how the 3 day cardiac diet should be followed.

Day One

Breakfast: Black coffee, water, or tea; half of a grapefruit or pink grapefruit juice; and one slice of toast with 1 or 2 tablespoons of peanut butter

Lunch: Black coffee, water, or tea; 1/2 cup of water-packed tuna; and one slice of dry toast

Dinner: Black coffee, water, or tea; 3 oz lean meat; 1 cup green beans; 1 cup beets; 1 cup vanilla ice cream; and one small apple

Day Two

Breakfast: Black coffee, water, or tea; one egg, any style; one banana (some versions say 1/2 banana); and one slice of dry toast

Lunch: Black coffee, water, or tea; 1 cup of cottage cheese; and five saltine crackers

Dinner: Black coffee, water, or tea; two hot dogs; 1/2 cup carrots; 1 cup broccoli (or cabbage); one banana (some versions say 1/2 banana); and 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream

Day Three

Breakfast: Black coffee, water, or tea; five saltine crackers; one egg (or one slice cheddar cheese); and one 4-oz glass of apple juice

Lunch: Black coffee, water, or tea; one hard-boiled egg; one small apple; and one slice of dry toast

Dinner: Black coffee, water, or tea; 1 cup tuna, chicken, or turkey; 1 cup cauliflower or green beans; 1 cup beets; 1 cup cantaloupe or one small apple; and 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream

After you have completed the 3 day cardiac diet, you should eat a low calorie diet so you do not regain the weight you just lost on the 3 day cardiac diet. If you have additional weight to lose, you may resume the 3 day cardiac diet after taking a four day break.

can I drink tea for breakfast? Is the hot dogs with the buns?

Carol ·

does it make a difference whether it is a whole banana or 1/2 and on the 3rd day does it make a difference whether it is the tuna and can use chicken or turkey instead...it says just have to follow it exactly or it don't work...

Carol ·

on the last day it says 1 cup of cantalope or small apple...mine SAYS 1/2 banana and 1/2 cup cantalope...which one do i use...

There is another version of the diet that does have substitutions. It's still strict about the amounts you can eat, but frees up some of the things that make the diet difficult to bear. Works great, though!

Helen ·

Is it beetroot or silverbeet or doesn't it matter

jackie ·

is the fluid intake exactly as written or can i drink glasses of water throught the day?

Mike ·

Drink as much water as you want. the more the better. use water as an appetite suppressor.

Anita ·

Do you have to eat the two hot dogs? I just can't do that. Can you substitute for 3 ounces of lean meat?

Quinn ·

JFC people - THINK FOR YOURSELVES. Would they let cardiac patients eat ice cream or hot dogs??? This is another pure BS diet that is unhealthy for you - look at what WEBMD or any other REPUTABLE medical person has to say about this diet, then go make HEALTHY CHOICES instead of falling for another fad diet.

My husband's cardiac diet does not allow hot dogs, ice cream, cheddar cheese, saltines, or peanut butter. They are either too high in sodium, contain too much fat, or are too high in sugar content. This may be a quick weight loss diet but....cardiac....NO!

I did this diet 3x in row (with the 4 days of eating what you want). This is NOT a BS diet for the keyboard doctors out there. I lost 9 pounds for the 1st 3 days (weighed myself the morning of the 4th day). Took 4 days off and started it again...did this one more time and lost 25.4 pounds in 3 weeks with the only exercise being walking. The only thing I changed on this diet is the beet, broccoli and cabbage. I added more plain lettuce to take their place. This may or may not work for you but don't knock it till you try it. This is a hard diet to stay on track...if you say "no its not", try it and see. Once you get past lunch on Day 2, its all down hill and easy from there. I actually started Day 1 this morning.

I did this diet in the early 90's. Its not BS. ITS EXTREMELY hard but I lost 85 lbs in 3 months. I've got to try the diet again because after 2 babies and 3 years after my youngest was born, I need a lot of help.

Forgot to add some info. that I remembered. 1. No bums w hotdog 2. Yes, drink lots of water. 3. Keep busy and mind off food. 4. Moat import, toy, this diet is for people that have a lot of weight to lose, not just 10 lbs. Catch my drift? Of you choose to do this diet, which DOES work, then stay strong, persevere, and try not to behead your lives ones. I was a bit cranky when I dis it.

This plan does work. It has been around for about 30 years. However it used to be called the Hershey diet developed at Hershey Medical Center from what I was told. I can't say why exactly it works. I've done it a few times and it's my go to start up plan when I want to lose a few pounds. I am not a nutrition specialist, but I have been following weight loss plans over the years. In the end , you do what works for you. I do believe that the combinations of food and low calories do assist with losing weight, however, it may be simply water weight. I'll have to test my theory someday and actually test body fat before and after. What if someone actually did come up with an eating plan that worked like this? Food is our fuel and helps us function. All food in moderation. We need healthy fats for our body to function properly. Try it!
