Food Groups Nutrition

The food groups all have their different roles in the wellbeing of our bodies. This factor means that the amount of food needed for the body must always contain a good ratio of all the food groups if it is to achieve its purpose of maintaining a healthy and functional body. Before sitting down to take a meal, it is important to clearly determine whether the food you are about to take is well balanced.

When we talk about a balanced diet, we are basically talking about the correct ratios of all the three food main food groups. Each person has his own calorie demands and thus each person may require a different amount of each of the food groups. Determining how much of each food group a body needs is further determined by the body's activities. This is also dependent on the age of the person and his body type. In order to get a better outlook of these requirements, it would be advisable to have a clear understanding of the food pyramid. The food pyramid clearly provides guidelines on how much of each of the food groups can be consumed without exposing the body to nutrition related health risks.

According to the food pyramid as developed by the U.S department of agriculture, it is highly recommended that you take some foods in large quantities and others in small quantities depending on their effects on our health. The food pyramid contains four main categories of foods with bread and grains coming at the very bottom. By being at the very bottom of the pyramid, the indication is that this group of foods can be eaten in large quantities than any other food group. Vegetables and fruits come second followed by proteins and dairy products. At the top most slot of the pyramid are the fats, oils and sugars or sweets. These groups of foods are to be taken in very small portions since they have adverse side effects if taken in large quantities.

The food groups' nutrition should be a very important guideline in selecting your daily meals whether for young kids, adult or even people with special needs. The most common problem of obesity can be clearly taken care of if every family would adhere to the guidelines provided by the food pyramid as a means to achieving good nutrition. Lastly it is important to maintain a well balanced intake of all the food groups to avoid exposing our bodies to excessive strains in order to remain healthy.
